The Teacher Residency Model in SF
Adapted from the ‘medical residency’ model where residents serve under an assisting physician and gain the training required to practice medicine, SFTR residents work under the supervision of a cooperating teacher while training to become teachers of record for the San Francisco Unified School District.

- Residents are placed in an SFTR Teaching Academy in San Francisco under the guidance of a Cooperating Teacher.
- Over the course of the year residents gradually assume greater responsibility for the planning, instruction, and assessment in their classrooms.
- Residents participate in a teacher education program either at Stanford University (primarily for math and science candidates) or the University of San Francisco for math, science, Spanish bilingual or elementary
- Attend a student teaching “practicum” seminar every week with both USF and Stanford residents that addresses topics specific to San Francisco teachers and students.
- Weekly individual and group meetings with SFTR coaches and university supervisors
- Instructional Rounds to expand understanding of a wide range of pedagogical approaches through guided observations in different classrooms.
- At the end of the residency year, program graduates earn a California Preliminary Teaching Credential and a Master’s degree (Stanford) or coursework leading to a Master’s degree in education (USF).
- Individual coaching and new teacher support to complete state requirements for teaching credential.
- Continued support and development of lasting teacher networks and professional growth from the cohort.
- Earn your Master’s degree and California Teaching Credential from Stanford University or the University of San Francisco at reduced costs – 40% tuition remission at USF and significant loan forgiveness at Stanford – in return for committing to teach for a minimum of three years in SFUSD
- Eligible for possible housing stipends upon completing SFTR
