Application Process

The 2015-16 application process is closed, though interested and eligible candidates can apply and may be placed on the waitlist. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

Application Process

There is a four-step process for applying to the San Francisco Teacher Residency.

Step One

To be admitted, candidates must pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) exam(s) in your subject area. Upcoming dates for these exams include:

  • CSET:
    • January 10, 2015 (paper-based tests in science)
    • January 26, 2015 Computer-based tests (math, multiple subjects) that have a 3-4 week reporting timeline.
  • CBEST:
    • January 10, 2015 (paper-based test)
    • February 23, 2015 (computer-based test)

Step Two

Applicants must be admitted to the teaching program at one of our partner institutions—Stanford University or University of San Francisco—for a secondary math or science credential or for a bilingual Spanish credential. There will also be a very limited number of spaces for candidates for the elementary multiple subjects credential.

To learn more about or apply for the University of San Francisco School of Education’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a Preliminary Single or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential please visit: http://www.usfca.edu/soe/programs/ted/ma_teaching/. To learn more about or apply for Stanford University School of Education’s Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) please visit http://suse-step.stanford.edu/.

Please note:

  • Math and science credential candidates can apply to either Stanford or USF.
  • Bilingual and multiple subjects candidates can only apply to USF.

You can apply for the following Master's program at USF:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching
  • Master of Arts in Teaching Reading
  • Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Unfortunately the following Master's program doesn't qualify for SFTR requirements (due to the way courses are scheduled):
  • Master of Arts in Teaching: Urban Education & Social Justice

Step Three

Complete a supplemental San Francisco Teacher Residency application after completing steps one and two.

Step Four

After the screening of supplemental applications, top candidates will be invited to participate in SFTR’s Selection Day in San Francisco on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Other arrangements will be made for out-of-state candidates. Spanish bilingual candidates will be required to participate in a Spanish language interview before admission is granted.
